Let's Talk Motherhood

Would you ever have imagined that the most important thing in your life - the most important function of you as a human - you winged it and you won? That’s only a mildly loaded question with a big wink. I am talking about motherhood. With Mother’s Day here my mind goes into a reflective mode. I thought about how my mother graced her motherhood, how I am as a mother, and how my children parent their children.

Her life wasn’t about career or personal goals. It was all about us kids and our wellbeing. My mother is one of those selfless humans who only celebrates when we’re happy, healthy and meet - or succeed our goals.

My mom parented us with her first and foremost priorities - we were and are her life (sorry dad) and that’s how she wanted it. Her life wasn’t about career or personal goals. It was all about us kids and our wellbeing. My mother is one of those selfless humans who only celebrates when we’re happy, healthy and meet - or succeed our goals.Soley and her mom

We learn all kinds of things from our mothers - managing our homes, cooking, caretaking, and humor gets in there too. Without our mothers knowing that we’re actually paying attention. I’m not fully sure if we were paying attention - I believe that our mothers simply ingrain certain domestic values in us. I also think that we are always going to be a version of our mothers. I mean, how can we not?

As an actress to then starting my own company - I didn’t analyse raising my children, I just did it (without fear).

Among many lessons my mom taught me, there's a subconscious favourite that I might just be realising now - as I reflect on motherhood. Being a confident mother goes beyond explanation. If I show a sign of weakness or fear in raising my children - they’ll feel that and therefore not be confident. In raising my children my big goal was that they’d be healthy, independent and happy. As an actress to then starting my own company - I didn’t analyse raising my children, I just did it (without fear).

I do believe that my outdoor passion makes me a role model as a mother in a way. It makes me stronger and in Iceland - us women tend to be fierce.

And I knew that I had adopted how I am as a mother from my mother - leading with love. I’d be okay. And hopefully better than okay.

My feeling about Mother’s Day is allowing the mother in us to be human beings and if possible to honour our passion. Mine being outdoorsy craziness - I will take time to be in nature, to cross glaciers - and to be with mother nature. I do believe that my outdoor passion makes me a role model as a mother in a way. It makes me stronger and in Iceland - us women tend to be fierce.Soley and her 2 oldest girls

Your children are an extension of you and when they have their own children - it’s simply another layer of love that you never could have imagined. And then you see how they parent - it’s thought out, structured and effortless. I am a blessed mother of mothers. And now we just celebrated twin girls (a set of grand girls OMG) Gígja og Sóley. The most magical Mother’s Day gift - not only twin grand girls, but also that my name was honoured. I’m a walking gratitude.

Have a beautiful Mother’s Day - and ps. every day is mother’s day.
