As winter settles in and frost covers the land, Iceland enters a special season called Þorri — a time deeply rooted in Icelandic tradition. This year, Þorri begins on January 23.
Þorri is the fourth winter month in the old Icelandic calendar and marks the halfway point of winter. It begins on Bóndadagur, or Farmer’s Day — traditionally a day to honor the bóndi, a word that historically refers to the farmer of the household and is often used to mean husband. On this day, women are meant to show extra care and appreciation for their bóndi as he symbolically welcomes Þorri into the home.
